Organising Committee of Summer Deaflympics I am deeply honoured to present you with this Spectator Guide for the TOKYO DEAFLYMPICS. I am delighted that Tokyo will host this commemorative event in , marking the th anniversary since the first Deaflympics was held in Paris in . Whilst Japan has hosted the Olympics and Paralympics four times in total across summer and winter editions, the Deaflympics has never been held here before. Hosting the Deaflympics in Japan has been a long-cherished dream for Japanese deaf athletes and deaf children. The Japanese Federation of the Deaf committed itself to the bid process to fulfil these many hopes and dreams. On th and th September , at the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf General Assembly held in Austria, we finally submitted our candidacy and, following the vote, Japan's hosting was decided unanimously. This was deeply moving, whilst we also keenly felt the expectations from around the world for Japan to host the Games. Eugène Rubens-Alcais, the founder of the Deaflympics, lived in an era when deaf people had low social status and sign language was not recognised as a language. He sought to change innovations in competitions, and what TOKYO DEAFLYMPICS aims to achieve. I sincerely hope this guide will serve as a catalyst for more people to learn about, take interest in, and cheer on deaf athletes through sign language and Cheer Signs at this historic Games. Finally, I must emphasise that the success of TOKYO DEAFLYMPICS cannot be achieved without your support and cooperation. I humbly request your continued support to ensure this Games becomes a wonderful festival of sport that all people - hearing and deaf alike - can enjoy together and share the excitement.ChairpersonHISAMATSU Mitsujisociety by holding international sports competitions for deaf people, organised and run by deaf people themselves. We will carry forward the ideals of the Deaflympics and use the hosting of TOKYO DEAFLYMPICS as an opportunity to promote communication and information accessibility, breaking down barriers for people with and without disabilities, and making further progress towards realising an inclusive society where hearing and deaf people live together. This guide has been created to help you deepen your understanding of the Deaflympics and enjoy watching the competitions more fully by providing smooth access to information about the highlights and match details of each sport. It provides detailed explanations of the history and appeal of the Deaflympics, the visual information provisions and communication Greetings
