Beach Volleyball
Overview
- Playing on sand, two teams hit a ball at each other over a net.
- Players must return the ball to the opponent’s court within three touches. They earn points if the ball hits the ground within the opponent’s court.
- A rally scoring system is used, with the first side to score 21 points in one set the winner.
Features as deaf sport
Each team has only two players playing on a wide-open sand court. The movement of the ball is greatly affected by the wind, making it all the more important that players have both physical and mental strength, intricately thought-out offensive and defensive strategies, and the ability to use the wind to their advantage.
There are times when a player dives for the ball at the last second to keep it in the air, impressive one-on-one blocks, shots made by outsmarting an opponent, and other moves that can only be made on a sand surface and because there are only two players to a side. This gives the sport a number of appealing features that set it apart from indoor volleyball.
There are also features that are unique to deaf beach volleyball, as follows.
- The chief and assistant referees sometimes shake the net to inform the players of fouls or give other instructions.
- Sign language interpreters stand ready at courtside and will sign when the chief referee has something to communicate.
