Competition Introduction

A sport where two athletes grapple with each other on tatami mats.

Basic Rules

  • When either athlete’s technique meets requirements, it becomes “ippon” and that athlete wins, ending the match.
  • When a technique is executed and controls the opponent but doesn’t meet all “ippon” requirements, it becomes “waza-ari”, and two “waza-ari” equal “ippon”.
  • Besides “ippon” and “waza-ari”, there is a third score called “yuko”. Note that accumulated “yuko” do not become “waza-ari”.

Unique Aspects of Deaf Sports

Deaf judo features tapping athletes’ shoulders to signal referee instructions like“begin” and “wait” when they may not hear clearly.
