Judo

Photograph of judo athletes.

Overview

  • Two athletes compete against each other through close combat on tatami mats.
  • When one of the athletes performs a waza (technique) that fulfils all of the requirements, they earn an “ippon”, which constitutes a win.
  • If an athlete is able to overcome the other but their technique does not fulfil all of the requirements, it is counted as a “waza-ari”. Two “waza-ari” count as one “ippon”.

Features as deaf sport

Same international regulations as hearing sport are applied to deaf sport.
But with deaf judo, since athletes may have difficulty perceiving the referee’s instructions of “hajime” (start) and “mate” (wait), the referee communicates by tapping on the athletes’ shoulders.
